The Wall Street Jounal has a good piece by Charles Murray about the importance of abolishing tax withholding. This is important because the average taxpayer does not have a good sense as to the true cost of government for they pay it through tax withholding. If each taxpayer had to pay their income taxes quarterly by physically writing a check to the government, like self-employed individuals do, then they would be more engaged and demand fiscal restraint for government.
